Live Online Russian Classes vs Language Apps: What Actually Works

Live Online Russian Classes vs Language Apps: What Actually Works
Many people start Russian with an app. It is convenient: short lessons, a streak, a few new words each day. After a month the alphabet looks familiar, but a real conversation still feels impossible.
That is not a failure of motivation. Apps and live classes do different jobs.
What apps are good for. An app helps you:
  • learn the alphabet
  • remember basic words
  • keep a daily habit
  • check a phrase quickly

This is useful at the very beginning. It is not enough if your goal is to speak, understand answers, or pass an exam.
An app cannot hear your pronunciation, correct a case ending in a live sentence, or make you reply when you hesitate. Russian grammar — cases, aspects, verbs of motion — needs feedback. Without it, learners often recognise words on the screen and stay silent in a conversation.
What live online classes are for
A live online Russian course is a real lesson with a native teacher. You speak, listen, make mistakes, and get corrected in the same class.
This format works better when you need to:
  • start speaking, not only tap answers
  • follow a programme from A1 to C2
  • prepare for TORFL
  • keep a schedule and a teacher who knows your level

At MGU Russian Language Centre, online groups are small (usually 3–5 students). You can also take individual lessons. Materials are included. After the course you receive a certificate. A trial lesson is available before you choose a group or a one-to-one package.

If you only want a few travel phrases, an app may be enough. If you want to study Russian as a language — from zero to confident speech — you need live practice.
A practical way to combine both
  • Use an app for 10–15 minutes a day: words, listening, revision.
  • Use a live class for speaking and grammar.

That combination is more effective than switching between five apps and never speaking.
How to start
Take a free online test if you already know some Russian.
Book a trial lesson.
Join a group or start individual online Russian classes.
Live classes do not replace short practice at home. They give you the part an app cannot give: a teacher, a group, and a reason to speak
